How to Paint on Hardboard or Wood | Acrylic Painting

Hi, I’m Linda. I created a company called Paint Along. Check us out at paintalongnyc.com. We have really fun painting workshops in Nashville
and New York. Hardboard is a great surface to paint on as
well. And it comes in a lot of different shapes
and sizes. These are some that we picked up at the craft
store. This one is built like a box. It’s made out of hardwood and it’s primed
so you can actually paint on the surface. The good thing about this one is that you
can go ahead and paint the edges and just hang it on your wall as it is. You don’t have to frame these. They’re great for small works of art; maybe
a little collage; or something that’s very simple. Another option is a hardboard panel. This one has also been primed, but you can
see the back of it. It’s a masonite board that’s just been cut
to size. This is also a great way to save a little
money if you’re getting started because you can cut these, have them on hand, and just
play with your acrylic paints. The surface is very smooth. It’s very different than working on a canvas. I’m going to show you just a little bit of
painting on top of this hardboard. This is just a mixture of phtalo blue and
white. And I’m just doing a very quick background
stroke. And you can see that it covers very well. And the paint will dry similar to the way
it dries on a canvas. And you can go over the paint time and time
again and build your layers. As you can see, the hardboard is a very smooth
surface. The paint glides over it very easily. The drying time is roughly the same as with
a canvas, so you can paint a layer, let it dry, and then come back to it. And those are some of the benefits of painting
on hardboard.
