Life Update

This is my summer pro tip. You take a
bandana, you run it under some cold water, you toss it in the freezer for a couple
of minutes, and then you wrap it around your head. You’re going to be seeing a
lot of these throughout my videos in the coming future. You also might hear the
fan in the background, because I’m not turning it off anymore.
I subtitle my videos now, so if you have any troubles hearing, just click on those
subtitles. I thought I would do a #lifeupdate here–a quick little life
update, maybe an intro rebrand, because I’m just procrastinating in all aspects
of my life.
And I guess we’ll start with the biggest thing, which is I got a new
job! Right out of college, I got a day job at Barnes & Noble being a bookseller, and
that lasted for two years–almost two years. And recently, I have just been
hired by a publishing company. I don’t know how much detail I want to give away
on my channel so far yet, just because I don’t know how much I will be–or I’m
allowed to be–talking about what I’m doing. But I have a new job in the book
industry, which is really exciting for many reasons! The first one is that it’s
like money that I didn’t have before. It’s consistency that I didn’t have
before. I’m so excited to work on 9:00 to 5:00, to wake up every morning, to maybe
go to sleep at the same time every night, which will be a ver,y very new thing to
me. Like, not since high school did I do this.
Number three, it’s also something that I never imagined myself doing. If you asked
me three years ago if I ever imagined a career in the book industry, I would have
said no. I went to school for theater. I went to school for acting, and that was a
big decision to make then, and it’s a decision that I pursued and did find
work in and did get money in, but ultimately, the inconsistency is what
kind of drove me away from that–at least for now. So I thought “hey, let’s try
publishing! I have zero qualifications other than a love and interest in
literature, but let’s try anyway!” and after about eight months or so of
applying, I finally got a job. This job in particular took about a month and a half
of phone calls, interviews, lunch meetings– that was super corporate and exciting,
I’ve never done one of those before– until I was hired. And I start on monday. It’s
scary! It’s scary. It’s also really exciting, because this is just a new door
that has opened for me, and the only door that it is closed, is really just a job
in retail. I loved being a bookseller because I love books, and because I love
talking about books, but ultimately, working at a bookstore is so many other
things. So many other things that can be extremely negative, and not fun. So yes, I
will miss my co-workers, yes I will miss seeing releases come out, and knowing
what’s out, and having, just, knowledge about new publications. But ultimately, I
think this is good. More consistency in my work schedule means more videos that
I might be able to film, more vlogging that I might want to do. The dates for the
Booktubeathon were announced this year, and I’m so excited to do that
again. That was one of the first things I did when my channel started, so I’ll be
participating in that again this year. Especially because it falls on my
birthday, which like, that’ll be super fun to be vlogging on my birthday.
My birthday’s on a Tuesday this year too, so that’s like “new book release day.”
I do know that Fence by C.S. Pacat is coming out–
well, the bind-up of the original editions: which is a gay fencing graphic
novel. And then also R.O. Kwan’s The Incendiaries comes out on the same day
as well, so those are two book purchases that I’m going to be totally making.
Some bookish things:
I do have two haul videos planned out and ready to go. I’ll be
doing a graphic novels and manga haul. I’ll also be doing a poetry haul because
I have been accumulating both of those things. Look forward to those.
If you thought that I had forgotten about my BYOR series… you are right. I totally did.
I totally forgot that I accumulated recommendations to then respond to. So,
that will be coming soon because oh my goodness, shame on me.
And I want to give
a huge shout-out to Jennifer over at Insert Lit Pun Here, who is obviously
remarkable. If you follow my channel, you probably already follow her channel, but
if you don’t, please follow her channel. She’s brilliant. She did a video recently
about the epic Robin Hobb fantasy series that starts with Assassin’s Apprentice.
And I was like, “You know what, you were the first person to make me actually
really want to read these books.” Because I’m a big fantasy series reader, and I
have a lot of friends in my surrounding existence that are really big fans of
that series, but never before did I actually think that I would go for it,
just because it’s a large dedication to make. And I was like, “You know what it’s
at my local library.” I downloaded the audiobook and I loved loved it so much. I
just finished it today. I am so happy, so thank you Jennifer, because oh my
goodness this was a great experience. And you know
it just goes to show: YouTube and Booktube can be very positive influences
on your life, because it caused me happiness. I hear that the third book, and
in her video she says this (I’ll link the video down below), I hear that the third
book is a slog, but coming off of this first one and going into the second one
hopefully soon when that downloads from the library, I’m stoked. I highly
recommend the audiobooks for these, because the narrator does a fantastic
job, and for a lot of fantasy series, audiobooks can be difficult because
you’re dealing with, like, made-up words and things that are completely brand new.
But for some reason I really did gravitate and attach to this voice
reading me this story, so 10 out of 10 for that. Other booktube things that I’m
excited about: Kendra Winchester just started a series about reading and why
we read and how we pick books. I just watched the first video of that, and
apparently there’s going to be more so I’m super interested in that. I’ll link
it down below. I also really liked Olive from ABookOlive’s summer fiction book
haul. There were a lot of books in there: a lot of things that I never heard of or
a lot of things that I was reminded that I knew of and was interested in. So I’ll
link that down below too.
My booktube anniversary is actually coming up very
soon. My first video was posted on July 10th. Don’t watch it. It’s terrible.
But I don’t know if I’m gonna do anything for that. What should I do for
that? I don’t know. It’s exciting, but it’s also just, like, another day in my life…

I’ve been still raging on my Kpop kick. Kim Donghan, who was a member of my
favorite Kpop group, who since disbanded, JBJ, just released his
solo mini album. And it’s amazing–I’ll link the music video down below. Check
him out, support him, give him your love, STAN HIM, if you will.
And while I do know that there’s a lot of history and scandal around the existence of BlackPink, BlackPink after, what, three or four years? finally has more than five songs.
They have an actual mini album, which is really exciting. I’ve been super loving
Shinee’s new music. I can’t wait for the part three to come out, and then I’m
hoping that they’ll repackage all three albums in, like, one super album that I
will probably spend way too much money on purchasing. A.C.E finally got an album,
which is exciting. They’re working their butts off, and I feel so bad for them,
because they don’t have any funding, but I think that they’re very talented.
In terms of skin care things, I have been experimenting and playing with a lot of
new products. I’ll talk about them soon– maybe I’ll do my own haul for that, but
I’ve just been really enjoying The Face Shop’s line of Calendula products. I
really enjoy them. They’re super moisturizing. I love the smell. They’re
very clean. Ten out of ten. I’ll link everything that I talked about down
below. So that’s really all I have… because otherwise I’m gonna film videos
on anything else that I have to talk about. But I’m gonna turn it over to you:
Do you have any questions for me? How are you doing? Let me know in the comments
down below. Let’s just chat for a little bit. It’s been a while since I’ve, like,
super engaged with all y’all… I don’t say y’all… I don’t know why I just said that.
So put your questions, thoughts, comments, opinions, beliefs, or interests down below.
Otherwise, thank you so much for watching, and I hope to see you soon!

Hey congratulations on the job thatโ€™s lovely news ๐Ÿ™Œ Its feeling like itโ€™s the hottest summer weโ€™re having here that bandana idea is life changing. I got the same Robin Hobb series for my dad and he read them all in a just over a week (heโ€™s retired) he then spent the following couple of weeks annoying my mum and talking about bits of the story. Iโ€™ve not read them yet myself but audio sounds like a way forward ๐Ÿ˜ a current book which has given me all the joy is Letโ€™s Talk About Love ๐Ÿ˜ itโ€™s given me a lot of joy๐Ÿ˜„

  2. Jacqueline McMenamin

๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿค—Congratulations ๐Ÿ˜…You'll have to meet up with Jen ( insert literary pun here) as your now both in similar jobs in NY. You'll have to start writing something you'd want to star in now.

  3. Literary Prints

wow i love that sunflower intro card!! very aesthetique my friend.

i'm so excited for you!!! i loved this life update. so many happy, bright things waiting for you. and obviously, YOUR HAULS (books & skincare both) are happy, bright things I'M looking forward to watching.

p.s. where can the booktube-a-thon info be found? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

  4. Eric Karl Anderson

The news is out! Hooray! Big congrats! So happy for you! And what a benefit to us that it'll result in more book videos.
Thanks for all the other fun life/current interests updates too.
(Since you talk about Kendra's videos on why we read) For your 1 yr anniversary video I'd love to see a sentimental video about what first fostered your love of reading/people who inspired you to read/books you first bought, etc etc.
Instead of the bandana method of keeping cool you could use Marilyn Monroe's method from The Seven Year Itch of keeping her undies in the freezer. Haha.
    xx

Congratulations Matthew! Looking forward to hearing your opinions on books and your life with a brand new perspective ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Bookish Shenanigans

I've just found your channel and I don't know why it's taken me this long. I think you're great and I wish you the best of luck on Monday ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Kendra Winchester

Congrats on the new job! That's so wonderful you got a job in an industry you love. Job hunting sucks, and I'm so glad that's over for you! I am so glad you enjoyed the first video in my new experiment. I have had that idea on the back burner for awhile and it's been wonderful to hear everyone's own stories on why they read. Also, thanks for talking about the audio for the Robin Hobb series. That's the route I'd go, and sometimes high fantasy narraters are as exciting as watching paint dry. lol! Hope you have a great first day on Monday!

  8. Images on the Page

Hi! And isn't consistency surprisingly nice!! Also congrats on the new book job!! Excited to see how this goes for you and the videos you have planned!

  9. unmanaged mischief

omg omg! I am so happy for you! Like, I actually got a little emotional about thinking about all the opportunities you will have and not having to answer questions like "where is the nonfiction section" or "why is this book only available in hardcover" anymore. SO GREAT ๐ŸŽ‰

We should totally nerd out about the Farseer books! I just finished Assassin's Quest and that book was a giant pain in my ass and a very sloggy plane read, but I'm finally done and need people to talk about it with. Maybe we could buddy read the next book/books? I'm trying to force my partner to read Assassin's Apprentice so I can have someone to talk to about it, but he finds it a lot less pressing to race through it like I did. SIGH.

Also, congrats on the booktube anniversary! I am rapidly approaching my 5 year anniversary :O I hopefully will be doing a little celebration on my channel.

Thanks for reading my essay-length comment. I'm done now.

  10. PhysiqueQuantique

omfg Robin Hobb <3 I'm about to start a full series re-read and I'm so stoked. Congrats on the new job!!! That's amazing!

  11. ChallengeThyShelf

Hooray Matthew!! Congratulations on the job. Consistency is very underrated. I get agitated at a lack of routine so I totally understand your excitement for having a 9-5. I can't wait to hear about the position when you can talk more about it.

  12. Leslie Ring

Congrats on the new job!! Is this a weird thing to say (?) but I just love listening to you talk. You just very interesting and magnetic. ๐Ÿ™‚ a breath of fresh air on booktube. Looking forward to more videos!!

  13. curious hmm

congratulations matthew…both on the exciting new job and leaving a job that's beginning to sound unstable. and i'm glad we'll benefit with more videos…by the way i think i've always been watching your videos captioned.

  14. mxmgodin

Congratulations on the new job, Matthew!

Speaking of audiobooks, do you have some recommendations on learning to enjoy them better? I tried listening to a couple of them, but I always found it hard to focus. I end up being distracted by stuff going on around me, and realize I haven't been paying attention to a single word that was being said for minutes on end. So if I'm going to sit down and just listen to an audiobook with no external stimuli, I'd rather just take the actual book and read instead.

  15. whatpageareyouon

Congratulations!! ๐Ÿ’ซ I also just got a new job thatโ€™s a 9-5 grind that took about a month and a half to get all through, and I start Monday too! Best of luck to our first days! ๐Ÿ˜Š and yay gay fencing!

  16. JessicaReadsThings

I loved the Hobb series and need to get back to it… I'm going into the second trilogy, but wasn't sure about the audio, so thanks for that recommendation! Congrats on the new job! Also, love seeing SHINee get some more love. They're had such a year. I still haven't really been able to listen to their new releases, but I'm so proud of them for continuing on. ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. Diana M

So happy for you on your new job!
What's new with me: I just got back from a trip to Greece (family visiting and also swimming), during which I didn't read as much as I thought I would (big surprise), but I did finish the first of the Anne Bishop series that I'm now addicted to. Thanks, Matthew. Thanks a lot.

  18. 1book1review

Congrats on the new job and good luck for tomorrow!
On not being up to date with new releases it'll be fine. When I stopped working at a cinema I noticed I didn't know about all the movies anymore automatically and just found other ways to stay informed. You will too.

  19. Gwendolyn Kensinger

I am so excited that you got a job with more consistency. That's a huge deal! Congrats ๐Ÿ™‚
My husband went to college for theatre and acting and now he's a computer programmer so yeah I feel ya. Best of luck with your new adventure!

  20. Chris Bookish Cauldron

Congrats on the new job! And also happy adventures with Robin Hobb. My fave fantasy series of all time!

    Happy reading ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

  21. chboskyy

That's awesome about the new job, congratulations! Hope it all goes well ๐Ÿ˜Š and I have a request – a WHOLE video on KPop recommendations haha. I've recently become obsessed with BTS (particularly Jimin ๐Ÿ’•) and need more in my life, but there is SO MUCH TO CHOOSE FROM HELP

  22. Amy Pool

I'm so happy for you!!! I couldn't stop talking about how excited I was for you when I was at lunch with my mom lol! I know you will do fantastic!

I'm also super excited about Kendra's new series. Ironically, I've been thinking about doing something similar for awhile but just didn't get around to it! But now that the discussion has started I'm excited to join in! So much great content lately, my Watch Later list is getting out of hand, attempting to balance reading time and watching time is getting tricky!

  23. Amy Griffiths

Was the edition of Assassin's Apprentice that you listened to narrated by Paul Boehmer? I listened to the first three of Robin Hobb's trilogies last year, and really enjoyed them!
